Three decades of friendship – Dr. Ravichandra Raju

Last Updated: February 21, 2026By

For nearly three decades, Vasu has played a big role in my professional life—a mentor, colleague, and steadfast friend. Our bond, forged through endless shared travel and intense training like the ‘Aim Insights’ program in Mangalore, transcended work; it was a commitment to mutual growth.

Vasu taught me rigor. His journalistic discipline shines through in every action—the book and pen always ready, documenting the journey of children’s empowerment. His disciplined influence helped shape my early career after graduating from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences.   He supported my wavering and the challenges of that pivotal transition, eventually being instrumental in my selection for the Ashoka Fellowship.

But Vasu’s commitment extends far beyond the professional sphere. He used his skills to serve, instantly translating and publishing my books on disability into Kannada to ensure wide access. Even today, he remains dedicated, recently calling to verify the details of our Respite Care program for a piece in a Kannada paper—a testament to his enduring compassion for the vulnerable.

Vasu’s life—from his tireless work in various capacities for the Child Welfare Committeȩs in Karnataka, the State Commission for the Protection of Child Rights and the Karnataka State Association of Professional Social Workers to the multitude of manuals and books he has written to influence policy—is a legacy of pure impact.

Yet, amidst all this, the simple pleasure of meeting for a cup of tea in Hyderabad or Bangalore, catching up every few years remains the greatest gift.

Happy 60th Birthday, dear friend. Thank you for your leadership, your compassion, and your unwavering belief.

Dr. Ravichandra Raju is an Ashoka Fellow, disability development specialist and a consultant on development issues.
